THE STORY

Esther Oyeyemi (b. 1995) is a Nigerian artist based in Oyo State. The name "Asake" is of Yoruba origin and means "one who is cherished." This piece explores the intricate relationship between identity, self-expression, and cultural heritage through the universal medium of hair. Celebrating hairstyles as a form of personal narrative, where the subject’s style weaves together stories of beauty, resilience, and individuality.

About the artist

Introduction to Esther Oyeyemi

Esther Oyeyemi’s (b. 1995) artistic journey began in the vibrant city of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. From an early age, she found herself captivated by the world of art, using her creativity as a way to make sense of the world around her. What started as a childhood passion has grown into a lifelong pursuit, with Esther embracing a wide range of mediums to express her vision. Working predominantly with acrylic, Esther’s art delves into the concept of dualism, exploring contrasts and connections that reflect her own life experiences. Her pieces often carry echoes of her childhood, using vivid colours and textures to evoke memories and tell stories that are both personal and universal. Each brushstroke is a way for her to revisit those early years, translating her reflections into visual narratives that invite viewers into her world. Her formal journey in art began at the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, where she earned her Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in painting and graphic arts in 2017. She continued to refine her skills and broaden her knowledge, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Fine and Applied Arts Education from Obafemi Awolowo University in 2022. These years of study provided her not only with technical skills but also with a deeper understanding of how to convey her stories through art. Esther’s work has crossed both physical and digital boundaries, with her pieces showcased in various exhibitions. She has shared her creations at the Lasgidi Art Exhibition in Lagos and was featured in the Art Arising Virtual Exhibition (Alliance51) in 2021. Her talent earned her a place among the top 100 Nigerian artists at the Life in My City Art Exhibition in 2022. Most recently, she brought her art to an international audience, participating in a virtual group exhibition at Harmer Gallery in London in 2023. Now based in Oyo State, Esther continues to focus on her artistic career, painting with the same passion that first ignited her love for art. Through her work, she explores themes of memory, identity, and contrast, crafting pieces that speak to the beauty and complexity of life’s dualities.
