Arlette's art with the imagery of our inner worlds, playing with our need to find meaning in a mysterious and multifaceted reality. Dogs have been our companions, friends and helpers for millennia. Besides symbolising loyalty and unconditional love, they have long been viewed as guardians of the threshold to the other-worlds, a liaison between physical and non-physical dimensions.

About the artist

Introduction to Arlette Ess

Arlette's art combines the beauty of Nature with the imagery of our inner worlds. The subjects relate to our collective cultural storytelling contained in myths, archetypes and symbolism. Playing with our need to find meaning in a mysterious and multifaceted reality, she creates a magical universe of beasts and things miraculous, a love letter to Nature and ourselves. Arlette trained with Alexander McQueen and contributes to the Hermès Paris scarf collections, and shows her work in galleries and exhibitions. "I lose myself in the study of shapes and patterns in nature, fascinated by their infinite variation, precious fragility and ephemeral beauty. They offer a glimpse of the mysterious essence which generates and pervades all physical forms. I'm equally fascinated by how we are compulsively attaching meaning to everything around us, and how these myths, theories, superstitions and beliefs shape our relationship to the world, weaving our stories and the identities we create for ourselves. The intense immersion in the natural world and the conscious study of its intricate detail make me feel connected to all living things. I wish to share this feeling of existing as a part of something so magical and beautiful, a feeling of being at home in this world." The work is based on ink drawings, ink paintings and watercolour paintings, sometimes combined with digital layering or colouring.
